The Taos Hum: The Sound Only Some People Can Hear
Stand in the wrong backyard in Taos, New Mexico, at two in the morning, and you might hear it: a low, steady drone. Truly, it's like a diesel engine idling a few streets over. Except there's no engine. No truck, no generator, nothing obvious at all. And if your neighbor is standing right next to you, there's a decent chance they won't hear a thing.

That's the Taos Hum, and it's been quietly driving a small slice of the town a little crazy since the early 1990s.
Not just a Taos thing
Here's the part that gets buried under the "spooky New Mexico noise" headline: Taos isn't even the original case. The first big wave of hum reports came out of Bristol, England, back in the mid-1970s, when the local paper started getting flooded with letters from readers hearing an unexplained low rumble. A department store's industrial fans got blamed. The fans got shut down. People still kept hearing the hum.
Since then, "the Hum" has popped up in Kokomo, Indiana; Windsor, Ontario; Bondi in Australia; a handful of towns in New Zealand and South Africa; even, apparently, around Oslo, Norway in the past couple of years. Researchers estimate that somewhere between 2 and 4 percent of people worldwide have heard something similar at some point. Taos just happens to be the case that got famous enough to earn its own name.
The time the government actually looked into it
What makes Taos different is that someone with a research budget took it seriously. In 1993, after Washington heard enough complaints about the noise, a team assembled to find its source. Joe Mullins from the University of New Mexico led the effort, with help from Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Phillips Air Force Laboratory. A hearing scientist from UNM's Health Sciences Center joined in later to work directly with people who said they could hear it.
They built a custom low-frequency microphone out of an 18-inch woofer, parked recording equipment in an RV nearby, and let it run. Eight of the ten "hearers" in the study could hum or tone-match a sound that lined up with what they said they were hearing — so this wasn't purely imaginary. But when the team went looking for a matching signal out in the environment, they came up empty. No consistent seismic source. No consistent acoustic source. The report that eventually went to Congress basically said: real distress, no identifiable cause.
That's a strange place to leave a government investigation. Usually there's at least a boring answer — a transformer, a compressor, a pipeline. Not here.
The actual mystery isn't the sound. It's who hears it.
This is the detail worth sitting with: in every documented hum case, only a fraction of people in the same room, same street, same house even, report hearing anything. That's not how sound normally works. If there's a real noise in the air, ears in reasonably good working order should all pick it up.
So either something in the environment really is making a sound that only some people are physically capable of detecting, or the sound isn't coming from the environment at all.
A very recent twist
Here's where this gets fun to write about right now instead of five years ago: a study out of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, published this year in PLOS One, took a fresh run at this exact question. Audiology researcher Markus Drexl and his team tested 28 people in Germany who reported hearing an unexplained hum, checking two competing explanations.
First: do hum-hearers simply have unusually sharp low-frequency hearing? Mostly, no. Only two of the 28 tested better than average in that range.
Second, and this is the interesting one: does the inner ear itself sometimes generate faint sounds that most people don't notice, but a few unlucky people actually perceive? The cochlea does produce tiny sounds on its own as a side effect of how it amplifies incoming audio, called otoacoustic emissions, and yes, some people really can hear their own ears working. The team checked for this too. Also, mostly no.
What was left standing, by process of elimination, was low-frequency tinnitus — a sound generated somewhere in the auditory system itself, with nothing external causing it at all, that the brain nonetheless interprets as coming from outside. Drexl's read: a small number of hum cases probably do involve real, measurable, external low-frequency sound that's simply hard to localize. But for most people who hear a hum, the most likely source is happening inside their own head, indistinguishable from a real external noise.
So is Taos solved?
Not exactly, and that's the honest answer. The German study looked at 28 people, not the original Taos "hearers," and its own author is careful to say the small sample means the door isn't fully closed on real environmental sources in every case. It also doesn't explain why hum reports cluster geographically the way they do, or why some locations (Bristol, Taos, Windsor) generate hundreds of reports while most towns generate none at all.
What it does give us is the best working theory in thirty years for the single strangest part of the story: why the person next to you doesn't hear what you hear. Increasingly, the answer might be that there's nothing wrong with their ears, or with the air between you. There might just be something happening quietly inside yours.
